KalyeSerye in Eat Bulaga

Eat Bulaga!, the Philippine’s longest running noon time show, captured global attention in 2015 with the birth of the phenomenal love team, AlDub (Alden Richards and Maine "Yaya Dub" Mendoza).
Joined by the three lolas – Lola Nidora (Wally Bayola), Lola Tinidora (Jose Manalo) and Lola Tidora (Paolo Ballesteros) --  the story of AlDub developed into a series within Eat Bulaga and was later called "Kalyeserye." ("Kalye" meaning "street"; "serye" meaning "series")

Set in the street and the studio, KalyeSerye evolved into a live split screen mini tv series that revives Filipino traditions like respect for elders, love for family, and courtship. It constantly reminds everyone that with patience and perseverance, whatever one works hard for will come at the right time – or as Lola Nidora puts it, “sa tamang panahon.”

KalyeSerye spurred a renewed interest in Eat Bulaga as it transcended audience from all demographics – both local and international – and consistently trended on Twitter.   It is one of the most watched Eat Bulaga segments on the internet which would get a million views in less than 12 hours.  It is viewed by Filipinos from all over the world through GMA, cable subscription, Youtube or the internet.

On Eat Bulaga’s 36th year, it set new records with its biggest show to date, “AlDub: Sa Tamang Panahon” where the feisty matriarch, Lola Nidora, finally allowed Alden and Yaya Dub to meet. The country’s much-awaited television event ran for 3 hour s (no commercial break), filling the world’s largest indoor arena with an estimated 45,000 live audience and earning Eat Bulaga its highest rating at 50.8% setting a 45-point gap with its closest competition.  It set the world record for most number of tweets in one day with more than 41 Million tweets.

The Characters.

Wally Bayola as DOÑA / LOLA NIDORA
Doña Nidora Esperanza Zobeyala viuda de Explorer is Kalyeserye’s feisty grandmother, and the eldest of the three Zobeyala sisters, including Lola Tidora and Lola Tinidora.

At first, she was against the blooming relationship between her nanny and adoptive granddaughter, Yaya Dub and her suitor, Alden.  However, it was later on revealed that Doña Nidora was only trying to keep the two from making rash decisions and from getting hurt in the process. She essentially wanted them to know what true love is.

Strict, smart, and with a strong sense of family and the old Filipino ways, Lola Nidora imparts the wisdom she has earned from her own heartbreaking experiences, which explains her overprotectiveness towards Yaya Dub.

Maine Mendoza as YAYA DUB
Divina Ursula Bokbokova Smash, is Kalyeserye’s “Yaya Dub,” the equally stern “Dubsmashing” nanny of the rich Doña Nidora Esperanza Zobeyala viuda de Explorer.  However, her snobbish attitude all changed upon accidentally setting eye on Alden on television.  Smitten by his charms, Yaya Dub smiled for the first time and sent her pabebe wave to acknowledge the young man’s presence.

The road to meeting each other in person and to finally be together took them to a rollercoaster ride of emotions – love, excitement, action, heartbreak –thanks to Lola Nidora’s intervention.  Only when Yaya Dub and Alden learned to accept the lessons of Lola and embraced the values of the old Filipino ways, did their split screen romance grow from a whirlwind infatuation to a relationship with strong foundation – all of which came at the tamang panahon (right time).

Alden Richards as ALDEN
Alden/Alden Richards is the bedimpled young man who changed the life of the nanny, Yaya Dub, after pursuing her despite the disapproval of her uncompromising charge and adoptive grandmother, Lola Nidora.

Through his persistence and willingness to learn, Alden earned Lola Nidora’s trust and Yaya Dub’s heart. This led to Alden and Yaya Dub’s eventful meeting –in person—on what Lola Nidora referred to as “tamang panahon” (right time) and which may as well be the start of Alden and Yaya Dub’s “happy ever after. “

Jose Manalo as LOLA TINIDORA
Tinidora Zobeyala is the ladder-climbing, mini skirt-wearing, Mambo No.5- dancing triplet sister of Lola Nidora. Her liberated and free-spirited ways often prompt her to challenge Lola Nidora’s old fashioned methods.  Although she herself has no luck in love, she believes in the magical spark between her adoptive granddaughter, Yaya Dub, and her good-looking love interest, Alden.

Paolo Ballesteros as LOLA TIDORA
Tidora Zobeyala, the prettiest among the Zobeyala triplet sisters, is the most cheerful and optimistic grandmother of Yaya Dub.  Noted for her flair for make-up and fashion, Lola Tidora lightens up any situation by encouraging everyone to look good and feel good.

She is a firm believer and supporter of the Alden–Yaya Dub romance as proven by her signature Mariah Carey-like giggly shriek, "woooh!"
